CANOE SESSIONS
Solo and Tandem canoe skills- Flat water
Work on master solo and tandem paddling techniques while maintaining control of your canoe.
Solo Canoe and Tandem Canoe Skills – White Water
We are taking it to the river. Come work on paddling your canoe in white water. Solo and tandem skill swill be covered for all paddler. We will have demo boats to use but the numbers are limited.

For those of you have worked on your flat water skills and want to take your board out into the surf this is the session for you. This wil give you time to learn hw to break out into the surf and maybe catch a few rides back to the beach.

After a long winter, get your mind and body tuned up for the summer kayak season. This course is good for beginner and seasoned paddlers. Reviewing the fundamentals will help to improve your skill set and reduce the risk of injury.
Basic paddle strokes will be covered throughout the day with games and practice sessions that focus on boat control and paddling smarter.

Advanced sea kayaking rescues (Session requires a dry suit, helmet and prolonged times in the water)
Is there really such a thing as an “advanced” rescue, or is it just the same rescue performed in advanced conditions? What is it that makes a rescue challenging? What role does leadership plays in the successful resolution of an “advanced’ rescue? The answers to these questions will be revealed in this session.
Sea kayak surfing (Session requires a dry suit and helmet)
Come have a play in the surf; Work on setting up a safe surf session; practice launching and landing in surf. Get a feel for picking the right wave and how to ride the wave to the fullest.
This session will be divided into three different groups.
Maters session in the surf – looking to work on boat control and working the wave
Surf improvement – picking the right wave and working the wave
New to the surf – learning how to launch, catch a wave and balance in the surf zone
Incident management (Session requires a dry suit, helmet and prolonged times in the water)
A chance to paddle into situations that perhaps you have always kept away from, be rescued and help rescue others
This is the class to prepare you for the unknown. We’ll look at useful gear and necessary “hard” skills like rescues and towing. As important, we’ll also look at how good risk assessments and proper planning can help us avoid problems. You should already have the basics of a self and assisted rescue and you will put these skills into practice during some true-to-life scenarios.
Navigation (session required to bring your own hand held compass, charts will be provided)
Come pick up a few tips and tricks to avoid the feeling of being lost at sea
Rock Hopping Safety and rescue (Session requires a dry suit, helmet and prolonged times in the water)
This session will work on rescue maneuvers in and around the rocks. You will learn how to manage a group to prevent dangerous incidents happening. Students should have a solid understanding and ability to perform rescues in flat water and be willing to try them in this dynamic moving water environment. Helmets are mandatory and plastic kayaks are recommended. Paddlers should be in good physical condition and be dressed and ready to swim. This class is useful for anyone who plays amongst the rocks and essential for those that lead others in such environments.
Wind management and Boat Control Open to all ability levels
Edging, and working the kayak with your legs and core muscles. The course focuses on the boat part of the adage “Body, Boat, Blade.” Ever have a hard time getting your kayak to go straight in the wind? This class will teach the proper techniques and skills necessary to make your kayak go straight and turn when the wind is working against you and your kayak. The class will be held in open water with windy conditions. You will discover how to apply all of your flat water strokes and maneuvers in a windy environment. You will learn how to make use of a skeg or rudder to balance your direction in a cross or down-wind scenario. You will gain experience paddling in head, side and following seas in complete control. This class if fun for people who already know how to maneuver their boats in calm conditions and can perform deep water assisted re-entries.
Rock hopping skills. (Session requires a dry suit, helmet and prolonged times in the water)
Take your basic core surfing and rock hopping skills to the next level; This session is aimed at individuals who are willing to push themselves and have some fun around the rocks, We will be working on surfing slots, wave pour over’s and whatever else we might run into
Maters rock hopping skills – looking to work on better timing and more control around the rocks
Rock hopping skills – open to paddlers who are looking to play closer to the rocks. Session will cater to new rock hopper and people with some experience around the rocks.
Blending and alternative strokes – Open to all ability levels
Learn how to make all those cool strokes you know work together for optimum performance. Also edging and how it affects strokes.
Traditional Greenlandic paddling techniques and Greenlandic rolling Open to all ability levels
Work on Greenland paddling techniques and bracing skills using the Greenland stick as well as master your Greenlandic rolling. This is not intended as an introduction to rolling with a euro blade. It is aimed at sea kayakers using Greenland paddles to roll with. There will be plenty of extra paddles for people to use. For this session if you do not have your own.
Day Paddle Open to all ability levels
This will be a coastal paddle lead by a local guide to show you some of the great paddling opportunities on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia.
